Bible Writing Workshop:
Writing Ruth

A Day to Put Ourselves in Ruth, Naomi and Boaz’s Shoes, and

TRY OUR HAND AT WRITING MIDRASH

(Putting flesh on the Bible’s Barebones)

A Charming Story or Something More?

The Bible story of Ruth has captivated Christians through the ages. It is also dear to Jews, who traditionally—and to this day—read the Scroll of Ruth deep into the night on the festival of Shavuot, which Christians know as Pentecost.

It is not hard to imagine Peter and the other apostles gathered together to read Ruth at the very moment when the flames of the Holy Spirit came down to ignite their hearts.

It is a timely story of Christian harvest, following Jesus’ resurrection, one that features the character of Boaz as goel—redeemer—who simultaneously saves a Jew and a non-Jewish believer in the one God of Israel.
